Day 5

Dear readers,
the first few days have passed. So far, I still like my uniform. ;-)
It got a bit colder the last couple of days and today I really needed to turn the heating up for the first time since spring. Three layers (wool blazer, cardigan and long sleeved blouse) keep my upper body warm but my lower body is only protected by my knee socks and the skirt. When I sit, my knees and a few centimeters of my thighs are not covered at all. It's really not fair that only boys can wear trousers and we girls have to wear skirts! ;-) (there's a nice fictional story on that matter here)
I really should buy a pair of wool tights since the poll permitted me wearing those as well. But for now I can only turn up the heating and keep my legs together.
Love,
Cornelia

  1. Hi, I am very Interested in your experience. Does the cardigan have to stay on at all times with the winter uniform?

  2. Dear Richard,
nice to hear that somebody is interested. :-)

Right now the cardigan is mandatory with the winter uniform. That's good because it's a bit cold at the moment. However I'm not quite sure how I will handle this when it gets warmer in March or April.

What do you think? Should it mandatory at all times? Or should I be allowed to take it off when a specified temperature is reached? Or should I take it off whenever I want?

  3. I think to get a true experience it should be manditory. (i also assume that it must be kept buttoned up.)I Also like your rule for taking your blazer off - at the discretion of the dice. When i was in school, girls had to wear cardigans at all times - and we did not have a summer uniform. During may and the first 2 weeks of June, and then end of august and september, it could get quite hot in the classrooms (no a/c). Interestingly, boys could wear just short sleeve shirts.

  4. Of course it must be buttoned up, otherwise it wouldn't look neat, would it?
So by your regulation I will now have to wear the cardigan at all times with the winter uniform. I hope I won't regret that. :D I assembled some furniture recently and took off the cardigan because I would just get too sweaty.

Do you have any other ideas about regulations that could be enforced?

Also, I find your notion about the boys being allowed to wear short-sleeved shirts interesting, too. I always thought it would be just the other way around (long-sleeved shirts for the boys, short-sleeved blouses for the girls) because in business dress codes men are often expected to wear long-sleeved shirts whereas women can wear a top with short sleeves or even no sleeves at all.

  5. So did you consider that a school uniform could get hot & uncomfortable in warm weather? At my school it was common for the girls to be too hot in their wool cardigans, and not just when it was warm outside. In the winter the classrooms were often overheated, and the girls would sometimes ask if they could open a window. This was almost always not allowed, as the teacher and the boys would be comfortable enough.
I know what you mean about how you would expect boys to have it worse. But it seems that girls often have it worse with school uniforms. Even when ties have to be worn (which with adults is just for men) girls have to also. But then they still have to wear skirts, tights, kneesocks, etc.

  6. I really wonder why the girls at your school were not allowed to take their cardigans of. Strange rules. :-) Could they at least wear short-sleeved blouses? (not that it would make a huge difference, I guess)

I think that school uniforms being uncomfortable is a big part of why I am attracted to them. For example, I really like stiff collars. I guess no girl would wear them voluntarily. And getting hot in warm weather just adds more to the experience.

Do you have more ideas about regulations for me?

  7. I can't remember whether they were allowed to wear short sleeve shirts or not, as they always had their long sleeved cardigans on. I think that the few times I ever saw a girl with the cardigan off she would have been wearing a long sleeved shirt. But long sleeves may have been more comfortable, as the cardigans were wool and very itchy.
Your uniform seems quite extensive; I can't think of much to add. I would require tights in the winter and knee socks in the summer, but that's about it, other than requiring the cardigan at all times.

  8. You're right, I can't think of anything else, too. So my winter uniform is pretty much "fixed" with all items (listed in the right column) being mandatory. But maybe there should also be a rule about the cardigan with the summer uniform; right now it's just listed as "optional" there. Something similiar like I did with the blazer (and the dice) but I couldn't figure something out yet. I'd like to get to the point where I'm not allowed to (not) wear something by my own decision but rather being dependent on luck (e.g. the dice) or other stuff I can't control (e.g. wearing something depending on the weather forecast and not the actual temperatures).

By the way, requiring tights in the winter is also a good idea. I've been wearing the knee socks until now and it gets really uncomfortable. It's not really freezing cold but being used to wearing trousers my whole life, it's definitely unpleasant.

  10. Hello Stacey,

nice to get feedback from another reader. :-)
Personally, I would have preferred bottle green or maroon aswell, but as you may know I did an online poll and the result was that I had to wear a navy blue uniform.
I'll answer your questions in my next blog post (which is overdue) in a couple of minutes.
